Strange noises, flickering lights, a battery that mysteriously dies overnight, a check engine light that appears out of nowhere = ghost (the only logical explanation).
Let’s set the scene: It’s late at night. The road is dark, and you swear you’ve passed the same exit on the highway three times now. Suddenly, your headlights start flickering on and off, your engine lets out an unearthly screech, and your car starts shaking.
You look down at your dashboard and… BOO! The check engine light flashes on out of nowhere.
Cue the screams in the distance.
Has your vehicle started doing things that make you wonder whether you’ve accidentally purchased a possessed car? Before you call an exorcist, there may be a much more practical explanation for your car’s haunted behavior. Because behind most automotive mysteries is a mechanical problem just waiting to be discovered.
Here are 5 “haunted” car behaviors, the real mechanical culprits behind them, and how to get rid of the ghosts in your machine for good.
1. Strange Noises Coming from the Darkness
Squealing, grinding, clicking, knocking, humming, oh my!
If your car sounds like the FX department in the newest Halloween movie, something is trying to get your attention.
A squealing noise could point to a worn belt or brake component. Grinding may indicate metal-on-metal contact. Clicking can come from CV joints or other moving components, while humming or roaring may be related to tires, wheel bearings, or other drivetrain components.
2. The Lights Start Flickering
Lights flickering? Check. Something supernatural? Probably not.
While flickering lights can make your car feel a little haunted, they're typically caused by problems with the battery, alternator, electrical connections, wiring, or other components in the charging system.
If your headlights or interior lights are flickering, especially along with other electrical symptoms, it could be a scare-free sign that your charging system needs an inspection. A full system inspection can help track down the culprit and send that electrical ghost packing.
3. Your Battery Keep Coming Back to Life... Then Dying Again
You’re starting to wonder if your battery is part of the undead world because your car will start up perfectly fine one morning, only to be completely dead the next. If it’s not the supernatural, what could be causing this?
A battery that repeatedly loses its charge can indicate a failing battery, a poor electrical connection, a charging-system problem, or a parasitic draw, which is when something continues using electrical power after the vehicle has been turned off.
4. The Check Engine Light Jump Scare
BOO! The horrid check engine light pops on, and of course, it happens at the worst possible time.
While the check engine light may seem like a bad omen, fortunately, it doesn't always signal impending mechanical doom. However, the light itself doesn't tell you exactly what's wrong. Sometimes it can be something as simple as a loose gas cap, something more complex like a failing sensor or ignition problem, or a full-on witch's brew of different issues.
In the case that ghostly check engine light does appear, it’s best to bring your vehicle to a trusted mechanic to uncover the clues hidden behind the warning light.
5. Even the Car is Shaking in Fear
If you’re feeling mysterious shaking, vibrating, pulling, or hesitation while you drive, your car may actually be a were-car.
Okay, probably not. (Keyword: probably.)
Changes in how your vehicle drives and handles can be linked to problems with the engine, transmission, tires, suspension, steering, or brakes. That's a pretty horrific list of possibilities, but don't start running for the hills just yet. These issues can often be diagnosed with a proper inspection and testing by a trusted mechanic.
Getting to the bottom of those mysterious shakes and shudders can help keep your car from transforming into a full-moon monster.
Don't Let Your Car Become a Horror Story
The good news?
Most cars aren’t actually haunted.
The bad news?
It might be time to see a mechanic.
While taking your car to an auto repair shop may be the last thing on your mind, it’s a whole lot easier to find a mechanic than a paranormal investigator - and probably a lot cheaper, too.
Whatever creepy noises, flickering lights, mysterious shakes, or warning lights your car is giving off, Precision Tire and Auto Center – AZ can help. Our ASE-certified technicians can get to the bottom of those ghosts in the machine and figure out what’s really going on under the hood.
Because when your car starts acting haunted, you don't need an exorcist. You need a diagnosis. 🎃
