A small thermostat plays a big role in regulating engine temperature. Don't let a failed thermostat leave you stranded in Phoenix.

During an Arizona summer, you'll see a lot of auto repair shops talking about your vehicle's cooling system and major components like the radiator and water pump. While those parts certainly deserve the attention, there's another component that can leave you stranded in the heat: your engine thermostat.

 

Despite its relatively small size, the thermostat plays a critical role in regulating your engine's temperature. It controls the flow of coolant through the cooling system, helping your engine reach and maintain its ideal operating temperature. That's what makes this small component so important to your vehicle's performance, especially when you're driving through Phoenix's triple-digit temperatures.


Stuck Open or Stuck Shut?

Unlike many of the electrical components in your vehicle, the thermostat is a mechanical valve. Over time, it can wear out, stick, or fail to open and close properly. When this happens, the thermostat typically fails in one of two ways: stuck open or stuck closed.


  • Stuck Open: When the thermostat is stuck open, coolant continuously flows through the radiator. While this helps prevent overheating, it can prevent the engine from reaching its proper operating temperature. As a result, you may notice reduced fuel efficiency, poor heater performance, and increased engine wear over time. Although it's generally not an immediate emergency during a Phoenix summer, it should still be repaired.



  • Stuck Closed: When the thermostat is stuck closed, coolant becomes trapped inside the engine and can't circulate to the radiator, where excess heat is normally dissipated. Without coolant flowing through the radiator, engine temperatures can rise rapidly, making this the more serious failure, especially for Phoenix drivers facing triple-digit temperatures. 


Common Signs of a Bad Thermostat

One advantage of mechanical components is that they often show signs of wear before they fail completely. While a thermostat can occasionally fail without much warning, many begin to stick or operate inconsistently over time, giving you the opportunity to recognize the symptoms and have the problem diagnosed before it leads to overheating or engine damage. Some of the most common symptoms include:


  • Engine overheating
  • Temperature gauge fluctuating or reading hotter than normal
  • Check engine light on
  • Heater blowing cool air when the engine is warm
  • Coolant leaks caused by excessive pressure
  • Engine taking longer than usual to warm up

While a faulty thermostat is a common cause of overheating, it's only one part of your vehicle's cooling system.
