If you have a high schooler or college student heading back to campus this August, getting ready takes more than pens and paper. A reliable vehicle is just as important as a fully stocked backpack, yet it’s often the one thing left off the back-to-school checklist. Before the first day arrives, make sure your student’s car is ready for the miles ahead this semester.
The Brake Check
Back-to-school traffic includes sudden stops, crossing guards, and heavy foot traffic. For us, it’s just another school day, but for our vehicles it’s a daily brake test. If there’s any squeaking, grinding, vibrations, of a soft brake pedal, it may be time to have the brakes inspected before class begins.
Tire Safety
Your vehicle spends all summer baking in Phoenix's extreme triple-digit temperatures. Over time, the intense heat can accelerate tire wear, making your tires one of the biggest safety concerns on the road. Before sending your student back to campus, it's important to inspect the tires for adequate tread depth, uneven wear, dry rot, cracked sidewalls, and proper air pressure. Worn or underinflated tires can reduce traction, increase stopping distance, and become an even greater safety risk during Arizona's monsoon season.
Battery Vitality
As kids get older, the excuse changes from, "I'm sick," to, "My car won't start." And if you haven't had the battery checked before the new school year, they might actually be telling the truth.
Arizona's extreme summer heat is one of the leading causes of battery failure, often weakening a battery long before it completely dies. A quick battery test before the new semester can help prevent an unexpected no-start and keep your student from being stranded in the driveway.
Fluid Check
Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid are your vehicle's lifelines. Each one serves a specific, vital purpose in keeping your vehicle safe and operating smoothly on the road. Without them, what should be a routine drive to campus could easily leave your child stranded on the side of the highway. Before they head out for the first week of classes, make sure to check, top off, or replace these fluids.
Visibility Essentials
Some of the smallest items on your back-to-school checklist can make the biggest difference. Burned-out headlights, streaky windshield wipers, or an empty washer fluid reservoir may not seem like a big deal until your student is driving home during a monsoon downpour. Taking a few minutes to check these items now can help your student feel more confident behind the wheel, especially when Arizona weather decides to throw a curveball.
